What Does Export Tracked Time Mean?

“Export tracked time” refers to an action available in many time-tracking software. It allows the end-user to export their tracked time into timesheets or specific file types. The most common file types for exporting tracked time into are Excel, csv, and pdf.

Why Export Tracked Time?

There are numerous reasons for exporting tracked time. The most common ones are:

Importing the Data to Another Software

Time-tracking software and the companies that make them are constantly trying to implement new features, improve the user experience (UX), and make the overall software easier to use. With the market being highly competitive, it follows that some companies that make time-tracking software are and will be more successful than others in implementing new features and improving existing ones.

This gives project managers and team leads an opportunity, and possibly an obligation, to always be on the lookout for better time-tracking software solutions

If they happen to find one that better suits the overall needs of a company than the software they are currently using, they might consider making a switch. But, before they do that, they need to ensure that all of the data they’ve already collected does not go to waste.

This is when exporting tracked time comes into play. By collecting all of the data and exporting it into Excel, pdf, or csv file type, managers can ensure that no data is lost while transitioning to another software. And luckily, most time-tracking software allows for importing the data.

Ready the Data for a Review

Review processes are a usual part of most companies' internal dealings. In most cases, they happen:

  • Monthly
  • Quarterly
  • Bi-annually
  • Per annum

The review process can give companies a detailed insight into their success as well as areas in which they have underachieved. This can have a tremendously positive impact on the companies’ performance, as it gives them information about which things within the company need to be improved.

But, before the review process can start, team leads and/or managers need to ensure the data they send to the higher-ups is accurate and ready to be put into an upper management report (e.g., PowerPoint presentation). They can do that by exporting tracked time into the file type they are most familiar with and checking the data for errors. By doing that, they can ensure the tracked time data is ready for review.

Create Accurate Invoices

Creating and sending an accurate invoice is important, especially if the clients are charged per hour of work time. Exporting tracked time and using that data to create an accurate invoice can improve transparency and, in turn, keep both the parties involved in business dealings satisfied.

iOS or Android Compatible

Not all time-tracking software is iOS or Android compatible. This means that, in some cases, managers or team leads will not be able to check the tracked time data on the go or while attending to other duties related to business (meetings, conferences, and such).

By exporting tracked time to a file type that’s compatible with iOS or Android systems, managers or team leads can review and check the tracked time data regardless of whether they have immediate access to a laptop or not.
